AUSTRALIAN VISITOR VISAS

All persons who want to visit Australia, except for Australian and most New Zealand citizens, require a visa. This includes people who wish to visit Australia for tourism, short term business or elective study purposes.

Depending on the purpose of the visit and your nationality you may be eligible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). An ETA is an invisible, electronic visa that permits a stay in Australia of up to 3 months that can be applied for online.

If you are not an ETA eligible citizen and/or you wish to stay in Australia for the purposes of tourism for more than 3 months you will need to apply for a 'label' visitor visa from your nearest DIMIA (Australian embassy/ High Commission) office. Temporary Stay Business Visas 456 Short Stay Business visas are intended for people who wish to make short visits to Australia (up to 3 months at a time) for genuine business purposes. The purpose of your visit must be consistent with your personal attributes and business background and generally relate to your existing business activities (whether in or outside Australia). Business purposes include attending a business meeting or conference, exploring investment opportunities, or conducting business negotiations.
 
457 Temporary Business (Long Stay) visa categories allows Australian and overseas businesses that have been unable to meet their skill needs from within the Australian labour force to sponsor personnel on a temporary basis from overseas. Representatives of overseas suppliers of services seeking to negotiate, or enter into, agreements for the supply of services may be eligible to apply for a subclass 457 visa.
   

Permanent Stay Business Visas

Employer Sponsored Migration visas allows employers to nominate persons with specific skills for permanent residence in Australia.
  Business Skills Migration visas provide an opportunity for business persons to obtain permanent residence in Australia on the basis of their business background and financial standing.

Australian Student Visas

NOTE: From 1 January 2004, immigration law has been amended to introduce a new visa subclass to Australia’s student visa program – the student guardian visa. With the introduction of the student guardian visa on 1 January 2004, parents and relatives may now be able to accompany overseas students to Australia for the specific purpos of providing for their care and welfare. Please refer to the legislation update on the main DIMIA website for further information.

Purpose of visa

Any person who is not an Australian citizen or permanent resident may apply to study in Australia. Student visas can only be granted to people who wish to undertake all or part of a 'registered course' in Australia on a full time basis. A registered course is an education or training course offered by an Australian education provider, which is registered with the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).

Are there any work or study restrictions?
Yes, but you will have restricted work rights.

What are the criteria?

  • To be eligible to apply for this visa you must be enrolled on a registered course.
  • Health, there is a health requirement that may require you undertaking a chest x-ray and/or general medical where applicable.
  • Character, you do not need to provide a police certificate at the time of application

Australian Working Holiday Maker Visa Sub Class 417

Purpose of visa 
The Working Holiday Maker (WHM) visa provides opportunities for resourceful, self reliant and adaptable young people to holiday in Australia and to supplement their funds through incidental employment.
Are there any work or study restrictions?
Yes. You can only work an employer for up to 3 months. You may work for more than one employer during your 12 month stay.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the grant of a WHM visa you must:
  • be between 18 and 30 years of age at time of application;
  • be a citizen of a country with whom Australia has mutual working holiday arrangements. Currently, these countries are: UK; Republic of Ireland; Canada; Cyprus; Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); Germany; Japan; Republic of Korea; Malta; Netherlands; Norway; Sweden; Denmark and Finland.
  • intend to travel and holiday in Australia with the option of taking incidental work to supplement your holiday funds. (The visa is issued subject to the condition that you do not work for longer than 3 months with the same employer);
  • have sufficient funds for the fare to your intended overseas destination on leaving Australia PLUS enough money to support yourself during your working holiday;
  • have no dependent children;
  • have not previously entered Australia on a WHM visa; and
  • meet health and character requirements.

TRANSIT VISAS

All persons, except Australian citizens and New Zealand passport holders, must obtain a visa before travelling to Australia, this includes persons who are only transiting through Australia for a short period as part of their travel to another country.

However, persons holding passports from a number of countries may transit through Australia without obtaining a transit visa for a maximum period of 8 hours provided that they have a confirmed onward booking to a third country within that 8 hour period;

If you hold a passport of any other country or you intend a transit period of more than 8 hours you must obtain a transit visa before travelling to Australia even if you do not intend to disembark from your flight while in Australia. Diplomatic passport holders should contact their nearest Australian mission for further details if they intend to transit through Australia.

RESIDENT RETURN VISA

Purpose of visa  

The purpose of Resident Return Visas (RRVs) is to facilitate the re-entry into Australia of non-citizen permanent residents, and ensure that only those people who have a genuine commitment to residing in Australia, or who are contributing to Australia's well-being, retain the right to return to Australia and remain permanently.

Who is eligible?

  • You must be either a permanent resident or a former permanent resident other than a former resident whose most recent visa was cancelled
  • You may also be eligible for an RRV if you were an Australian citizen who has subsequently lost or renounced your citizenship.

There are a number of requirements to obtain an RRV, at least one must be met. The most common requirement is that you have spent at least 2 years in Australia out of the last 5 years. If this is not the case you may meet one of the other requirements.
