Allianz OSHC Review 2026: Cover, Cost, and Claims

Allianz OSHC Review 2026: Cover, Cost, and Claims — the short version is that Allianz Care Australia sits at the lower end of the OSHC pricing spectrum, with single 12-month cover typically falling in the AUD $480–$540 range and the same minimum benefits required of every approved OSHC provider. Three things make Allianz distinctive in 2026: consistently competitive premiums (especially for couple and family cover), the MyAllianz Care app for claims and member services, and a direct-bill clinic network that is mid-sized but expanding. It's best for cost-sensitive students studying in major metro areas where finding a participating clinic is straightforward. Students in regional or remote locations, or those who want the broadest possible provider network, may prefer Bupa or Medibank — see the OSHC Providers Compared guide for the side-by-side.

What's covered

Allianz OSHC meets the minimum standard set by the Department of Home Affairs for overseas student health cover, which means the following items are covered as long as you're outside any applicable waiting period:

  • In-hospital accommodation: shared ward in a public or private hospital, with hospital fees covered in full at participating private hospitals and at the standard public-hospital rate.
  • GP visits at direct-bill clinics: 100% of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee with no out-of-pocket cost. If you visit a GP who does not direct-bill Allianz, you pay the consultation fee up-front and claim back the MBS portion. The gap between the GP's billed fee and the MBS benefit is yours to pay — this is the single biggest source of unexpected costs for new students, so confirm direct-bill status before booking.
  • Specialist consultations: covered at 100% of the MBS fee on referral from a GP. Specialists frequently charge above the MBS schedule, and the difference is not refundable.
  • Pathology and diagnostic imaging: blood tests, X-rays, ultrasounds and similar diagnostics are covered when ordered as part of medically necessary treatment.
  • Ambulance: emergency ambulance transport is covered in full. Non-emergency transport rules vary — check your Certificate of Insurance.
  • Prescription medicines listed on the PBS: subsidised, with a per-script co-payment typically in the AUD $20–$30 range and an annual benefit cap most OSHC products set between AUD $300–$500. Confirm the exact per-script cap and annual limit with Allianz directly before relying on these figures.
  • Prostheses: items listed on the Australian Prostheses List are covered when used in a hospital admission.
  • Mental health treatment: in-hospital psychiatric care after the standard 2-month waiting period, and a defined set of community mental health benefits as outlined in the product disclosure statement.

What's NOT covered (the surprises)

This is where most new students get caught out. Standard Allianz OSHC does not pay for:

  • Pre-existing conditions during the 12-month wait. If you have an existing condition that a reasonable doctor would have diagnosed before your cover started, treatment for it is excluded until you've held continuous cover for 12 months.
  • Pregnancy and birth-related care during the 12-month wait.
  • Routine dental — checkups, fillings, cleans, extractions and orthodontics are not included. Emergency dental work that requires hospital admission (such as facial trauma) is the narrow exception.
  • Optical — glasses, contact lenses and routine eye tests are not covered under the base policy.
  • Physiotherapy and allied health outside hospital — chiropractic, podiatry, remedial massage, dietetics. These usually require an extras add-on.
  • Cosmetic surgery and elective non-medically-necessary procedures.
  • Assisted reproduction services are typically excluded.
  • Treatment received outside Australia. OSHC is for treatment inside Australia. If you travel home or to a third country, your cover does not follow you.

Allianz offers extras add-on products that can layer dental and optical benefits on top of the base OSHC, with annual sub-limits per service category. The detail (annual cap, per-item benefit, waiting periods) varies by product version — read the current PDS before paying for extras.

How claims work (step-by-step)

The fastest path is to use a direct-bill provider. Allianz lists participating clinics inside the MyAllianz Care app.

At a direct-bill clinic:

  1. Present your Allianz OSHC membership card (digital card in the app is accepted at most participating clinics).
  2. The clinic bills Allianz for the MBS portion directly.
  3. You pay nothing for services covered at 100% of MBS. You only pay the gap if the doctor charges above MBS.

At a non-direct-bill clinic or specialist:

  1. Pay the invoice in full at the time of the consultation.
  2. Open the MyAllianz Care app, select "Make a claim", upload a clear photo of the itemised receipt and the doctor's invoice.
  3. Enter the bank account where you want the refund deposited.
  4. Allianz reimburses the MBS-covered portion to your Australian bank account, typically within 5–10 business days. Complex claims or claims missing documentation take longer.

For hospital admissions, contact Allianz before the admission where possible. Pre-authorisation reduces the chance of unexpected gaps and confirms which hospital is a contracted facility.

Keep itemised receipts for two years. Allianz's standard claim window is generous, but the longer you leave a claim, the harder it is to obtain replacement documentation.

Switching TO Allianz from another provider

If you're moving to Allianz from Bupa, Medibank, NIB or another approved insurer, the goal is a clean handover with zero gap in cover.

  1. Get your Allianz policy issued with a start date that is the day after your current policy ends. No overlap, no gap.
  2. Provide Allianz with your previous insurer's name and member number when applying. Under the OSHC Deed (the regulatory agreement between OSHC providers and the Australian Government), waiting periods you have already served on an equivalent product transfer across. You do not restart the 12-month pre-existing condition or pregnancy wait if you've already served it with the previous insurer.
  3. Cancel the old policy with effect from the new policy's start date. Some insurers will arrange this for you when you switch; confirm in writing.
  4. Update your education provider with the new policy number — many universities are required to record your OSHC details for compliance reporting.

The Department of Home Affairs requires continuous OSHC for the entire duration of your stay under condition 8501 of the student visa subclass 500. A coverage gap, even a single day, is a breach of that condition.

Switching AWAY from Allianz to another provider

The mirror image of the above.

  1. Lock in the new insurer with a start date the day after your Allianz policy ends.
  2. Request cancellation of your Allianz cover through the MyAllianz Care app or member portal. Provide the new policy details so waiting-period credit transfers across.
  3. If you've paid for cover beyond the cancellation date, Allianz issues a pro-rata refund for unused full months. Refunds typically process within 10–15 business days to the original payment method or an Australian bank account.
  4. Keep written confirmation of both cancellation and the new policy start — useful if Home Affairs or your education provider ever audits your OSHC history.

If you're leaving Australia permanently before your policy expires (visa expired, course finished early, withdrawal), you can also request a refund. You'll usually need to provide evidence of departure such as a flight booking or stamped passport page.

Allianz vs the other three OSHC providers

vs Bupa. Bupa is the largest OSHC insurer in Australia with the broadest direct-bill network and partnerships at many universities. For most coverage categories, the two are equivalent because all OSHC providers must meet the same minimum benefits — the differences are price, network size and app experience. Bupa typically prices single cover AUD $50–$100/year above Allianz. If your campus has a Bupa health hub on-site or your preferred GP doesn't direct-bill Allianz, the network advantage may outweigh the price saving. For the full breakdown see the Bupa OSHC Review 2026.

vs Medibank. Medibank is Australia's largest health insurer overall, with comparable pricing to Bupa and a similarly broad provider network. The most-cited Medibank advantage is its higher per-item prescription medicine benefit (Medibank's PBS-script benefit is generally listed at around AUD $70 per script versus the ~AUD $50 per-script benefit many other OSHC products offer, including Allianz's base product — confirm current figures with each insurer). For students on regular medication, that gap matters. Allianz tends to come back ahead on couple and family premiums. See the Medibank OSHC Review 2026.

vs NIB. NIB sits close to Allianz on price and is often cited for stronger mental health and allied health benefits within its extras add-ons. Allianz's edge is the size of its hospital partnership network through the global Allianz group and competitive family pricing. NIB has invested heavily in its digital tools and university partnerships in recent years. Compare specifics in the NIB OSHC Review 2026.

FAQ

Is Allianz OSHC approved by the Department of Home Affairs?

Yes. Allianz Care Australia is one of the small group of insurers approved to issue OSHC under the OSHC Deed administered by the Department of Health and the Department of Home Affairs. Policies issued by Allianz Care Australia satisfy visa condition 8501 on the student visa subclass 500.

Does Allianz OSHC cover dental treatment?

Standard Allianz OSHC does not cover routine dental work such as checkups, fillings, cleans or extractions. Emergency dental treatment that requires hospital admission (for example, surgical repair after an accident) is covered. For routine dental, you would either pay out-of-pocket or add an extras product if Allianz offers one for your visa type — read the current PDS for what each extras tier actually pays per service.

How long does an Allianz OSHC claim take to process?

Straightforward claims submitted through the MyAllianz Care app with a clear itemised receipt are typically reimbursed within 5–10 business days. Hospital and specialist claims with multiple line items, or claims that need additional documentation, take longer. Submit claims as soon as you can after the consultation and keep copies of every document until the refund hits your account.

Can I add my partner or family to my Allianz OSHC policy?

Yes. Allianz issues couple and family OSHC for spouses, de facto partners and dependent children who are joining you in Australia on a dependent visa. You'll need their visa grant notice and identity documents, and the policy must cover all named dependents for the full duration their dependent visa requires OSHC. Family OSHC is one of Allianz's stronger pricing categories relative to competitors.

What happens to my Allianz OSHC if I extend my student visa?

When you lodge a further student visa or a new subclass 500 grant, you must have OSHC in place that covers the new visa period. Allianz lets you extend your existing policy through the member portal — you'll receive an updated Certificate of Insurance showing the new end date, which is the document Home Affairs accepts as evidence of cover for the visa application. Extend before your existing cover expires to avoid a gap that would breach condition 8501.
