Australian ETA for US Citizens: Complete Guide 2026

Updated: 25 June 2026

American passport holders qualify for the Australian Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), subclass 601, which permits multiple visits for tourism or business visitor activities. US citizens apply through the Australian ETA mobile app by scanning their passport and taking a selfie. The ETA links electronically to your passport and allows stays of up to three months per visit.

Are US Citizens Eligible for the ETA?

Yes. The United States is one of the eligible passport types for the ETA (subclass 601). The ETA is reserved for passport holders from a small set of countries and territories, and the US is on that list alongside Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Brunei, and Hong Kong SAR.

The key eligibility point that trips up American travellers is the difference between citizenship and residency. The ETA is tied to your US passport, not your US residency. If you live in the United States as a green-card holder but carry a passport from a country that isn't ETA-eligible, you cannot use the ETA. You would need an eVisitor (subclass 651) if you hold an eligible European passport, or a Subclass 600 tourist visa otherwise.

Beyond holding a US passport, you must also:

  • Be outside Australia when you apply
  • Hold a biometric (e-passport) US passport with an NFC chip
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Intend a genuine short visit for tourism or business visitor activities
US travel document ETA eligible? What to use instead
US passport (biometric) Yes
US passport (older, no chip) Limited / may fail app scan Subclass 600
US green card, foreign passport No Depends on passport nationality
US re-entry permit / travel doc No Subclass 600

How US Citizens Apply for the ETA

The ETA application process is handled entirely through the official Australian ETA mobile app. You cannot apply through a website, a desktop browser, or ImmiAccount. If you see a site offering to "process your ETA online," it is a third-party agent adding a markup, not the official channel.

Step 1: Download the Australian ETA app. It's free on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The official app is published by the Department of Home Affairs.

Step 2: Scan your US passport. Hold your phone against the bio page so it can read the NFC chip. This pulls your identity details and photo directly from the chip, which avoids typing errors.

Step 3: Take a selfie. The app matches your live photo to the chip photo using facial recognition.

Step 4: Answer the declaration questions. Short yes/no questions about character, health, and the purpose of your trip. Answer honestly — false declarations can lead to cancellation and future bans.

Step 5: Pay the service charge. A card payment is taken in the app. For the current amount, see the Australian visa fees schedule.

Step 6: Receive your ETA. Most are granted quickly, with a notification through the app. There's no label or stamp — the ETA is linked to your passport number electronically. For current expectations, check the visa processing times guide.

US citizens are generally treated as low immigration risk, which tends to make the experience straightforward. That said, fast processing is the norm, not a guarantee — never book non-refundable travel before your ETA is granted.

What US Citizens Can Do on an ETA

The ETA covers two categories of activity: tourism and business visitor activities. It does not grant work rights. The distinction between a "business visitor activity" and "work" is where Americans most often run into trouble.

Tourism activities include:

  • Holidays and sightseeing
  • Visiting friends and family
  • Recreational activities like surfing, diving, and hiking
  • Short-term study (up to three months)
  • Medical treatment

Business visitor activities include:

  • Attending conferences, seminars, and trade fairs
  • Making business enquiries or conducting negotiations
  • Holding contract discussions
  • Participating in formal business meetings

What the ETA does not allow:

  • Working for an Australian employer
  • Selling goods or services directly to the public
  • Providing services to a business in Australia
  • Freelance or contract work performed on Australian soil

A US software engineer attending a conference in Sydney is fine. The same engineer delivering a paid keynote, or doing billable client work from a hotel room, has crossed into "work" and needs a different visa. If your trip involves working in Australia, the ETA is the wrong tool — Americans have a uniquely strong option in the E-3 specialty worker visa, covered in our Australian visa guide for US citizens.

Validity, Stay Length, and Multiple Entries

Your ETA stays valid for up to twelve months from the grant date, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. Within that window you can enter and leave Australia as often as you like, as long as each individual stay is no longer than three months.

This suits American travellers who visit repeatedly — a US executive seeing Australian partners each quarter, or a family with relatives in Australia who visit more than once a year. One ETA covers the whole twelve months.

The three-month limit applies per visit, and the clock resets each time you leave. Fly to New Zealand or Fiji for a week, return, and a fresh three-month period begins. However, the Department of Home Affairs watches for patterns. Using back-to-back three-month stays to effectively live in Australia can lead to your ETA being cancelled or to a refusal of entry at the border. The ETA is for visiting, not for residing.

Rule How it works for US citizens
Validity Up to 12 months from grant
Stay per visit Maximum 3 months
Number of entries Unlimited within validity
Extensions Not possible — apply for a new visa instead
Passport renewal New passport = ETA must be re-applied for

What Differs for US Passport Holders

For tourism, the ETA experience for Americans is essentially the same as for other eligible nationalities — the app, the conditions, and the stay rules are identical. Three points are worth flagging specifically for US travellers:

  • Green-card holders are not covered by your US passport's ETA. Family members travelling with you who are not US citizens need their own visa based on their own nationality.
  • Every traveller needs their own ETA, including children. A US family of four lodges four separate applications, each with its own passport scan and service charge.
  • Americans have work-visa options no one else has. If the real purpose of your trip is work, don't stretch the ETA. The E-3 specialty worker visa is exclusive to US citizens — see the US citizen visa guide for that pathway.

If you renew your US passport, your existing ETA becomes invalid even if it hasn't expired, because the ETA is tied to a specific passport number. You'll need to re-apply through the app using the new passport.

ETA vs Other Visitor Options for Americans

The ETA is the default for short US visits, but it isn't the only door. If you need to stay longer than three months in one go, or your older passport won't scan, a Subclass 600 tourist visa is the alternative. European-passport holders use the eVisitor (subclass 651) instead. For a side-by-side of the two app-based visas, see our ETA vs eVisitor comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do US citizens need a visa to visit Australia?

Yes. There is no fully visa-free entry to Australia for tourism. US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601), which functions as a visa and is applied for through the Australian ETA app before you travel. It permits tourism and business visitor activities, but not work.

Can a US green-card holder use the ETA?

No. The ETA is tied to your passport nationality, not your US residency. A green-card holder must qualify based on the passport they hold. If that passport isn't ETA-eligible, you'll need an eVisitor (for eligible European passports) or a Subclass 600 tourist visa.

How long can a US citizen stay in Australia on an ETA?

Up to three months per visit, with the ETA itself valid for up to twelve months from the grant date. You can enter and leave as many times as you like during that period, but each individual stay cannot exceed three months. The ETA cannot be extended.

Can US citizens work in Australia on an ETA?

No. The ETA allows business visitor activities — conferences, meetings, negotiations — but not paid work for an Australian employer or billable work performed in Australia. Americans who want to work should look at the E-3 specialty worker visa, explained in our US citizen visa guide.

How much does the ETA cost for US citizens, and how long does it take?

A service charge applies when you submit through the app, and most applications are processed quickly. Because amounts and timeframes change, we link to live sources rather than quote a figure: see the visa fees schedule and the processing times guide.

Do I need to print my ETA before flying to Australia?

No. The ETA is entirely electronic and linked to your US passport number. Airlines and immigration officers verify it digitally — there is no label, stamp, or printout to carry. Saving a screenshot of your grant notification is sensible as a personal record, but it isn't required at the border.
