Australian ETA for Canadian Citizens: Complete Guide 2026

Updated: 15 July 2026

Canadian citizens visit Australia on the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), subclass 601. You apply in the official Australian ETA app by scanning your e-passport chip and taking a selfie, then pay a single AU$20 charge. The ETA allows tourism and business visits, multiple entries over 12 months, and stays of up to three months per visit.

Independent guide — not a government service. Australian Visa Online is an independent resource. We are not affiliated with the Australian Government or the Department of Home Affairs, and we do not lodge applications on your behalf. Always confirm current requirements through official channels before you travel.

Are Canadian Citizens Eligible for the ETA?

Yes. Canada is one of only eight passport types that qualify for the Australian ETA (subclass 601), alongside the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, and Hong Kong SAR. If you hold a Canadian passport, this is your standard route for a short visit to Australia.

The eligibility test is your citizenship, not where you live. The ETA links to your Canadian passport, so it is the passport in your hand — not your Canadian permanent-residence status — that decides whether you qualify. A permanent resident of Canada who carries a passport from a non-ETA country cannot travel on the ETA; they would need whatever visa matches their own nationality. Canadians are also not on the eVisitor (subclass 651) list — that free twin visa is reserved for European passports.

Beyond holding a Canadian passport, you must also:

  • Be outside Australia when you apply and when the ETA is granted
  • Hold a biometric (e-passport) Canadian passport with an NFC chip
  • Meet Australia's health and character requirements
  • Intend a genuine short visit for tourism or business visitor activities

How Canadian Citizens Apply for the ETA

The ETA is applied for entirely in the official Australian ETA mobile app. There is no website, no desktop form, and no ImmiAccount step. If you find a site offering to "process your Australian ETA," it is a third-party middleman adding a markup — or a scam — not the official channel. The genuine app takes a flat AU$20.

Step 1: Download the official Australian ETA app. It is free on the Apple App Store and Google Play and is published by the Department of Home Affairs. Check the publisher name before installing to avoid copycats.

Step 2: Scan your Canadian passport. Hold your phone flat against the photo page so it can read the NFC chip. This pulls your name, passport number, and photo straight from the chip, which removes the typing errors that cause check-in problems.

Step 3: Take a selfie. The app matches your live face to the chip photo using facial recognition, confirming you are the passport holder.

Step 4: Answer the declaration questions. Short yes/no questions on character, health, and the purpose of your trip. Answer honestly — a false declaration can lead to cancellation and a future ban.

Step 5: Pay the AU$20 service charge. A card payment is taken inside the app. That AU$20 is the whole cost; there are no separate government or handling fees on a genuine ETA.

Step 6: Receive your ETA. Grants usually arrive within minutes through the app, though some applications go to manual review and can take days to weeks. There is no label or stamp — the ETA lives electronically against your passport number. For current expectations see the visa processing times guide.

Canadian passport holders are generally treated as low immigration risk, which tends to make the process smooth. Even so, a fast grant is the norm, not a promise — never book non-refundable flights before your ETA is confirmed.

Validity, Stay Length, and Multiple Entries

Your ETA is valid for up to 12 months from the grant date, or until your Canadian passport expires — whichever comes first. Inside that window you can fly in and out of Australia as often as you like, provided each single stay is no longer than three months.

This makes the ETA a strong fit for Canadians who travel to Australia repeatedly. A Toronto-based manager visiting a Sydney office each quarter, or a family in Vancouver with relatives in Brisbane they see more than once a year, is covered by a single ETA for the whole 12 months rather than re-applying each trip.

The three-month limit is per visit, and the clock resets every time you leave. Take a week in New Zealand or Fiji, return, and a fresh three-month period begins. However, the Department of Home Affairs watches travel patterns, and stringing back-to-back three-month stays together to effectively live in Australia can lead to your ETA being cancelled or entry refused at the border. Separately, condition 8558 caps your total time in Australia at 12 months within any 18-month period. The ETA is for visiting, not residing.

Rule How it works for Canadian citizens
Validity Up to 12 months from grant
Stay per visit Maximum 3 months
Number of entries Unlimited within validity
Long-stay cap 12 months in Australia within any 18-month period (condition 8558)
Extensions Not possible — apply for a new visa instead
Passport renewal New passport = ETA must be re-applied for

What Canadian Citizens Can and Cannot Do

The ETA covers two activity categories — tourism and business visitor activities — and grants no work rights. The line between a "business visitor activity" and "work" is where travellers most often slip up.

Tourism activities include:

  • Holidays and sightseeing
  • Visiting friends and family
  • Recreational activities such as diving, surfing, and hiking
  • Short-term study (up to three months)
  • Medical treatment

Business visitor activities include:

  • Attending conferences, seminars, and trade fairs
  • Making business enquiries or conducting negotiations
  • Holding contract discussions
  • Taking part in formal business meetings

What the ETA does not allow:

  • Working for an Australian employer
  • Selling goods or services directly to the public
  • Providing a service to a business in Australia
  • Freelance or contract work performed on Australian soil — including remote work at your laptop, which still counts as work if you are physically in Australia

A Calgary consultant attending an industry summit in Melbourne is fine. The same consultant delivering billable client work from a hotel room, or logging into their Canadian job remotely from a Gold Coast rental, has crossed into "work" and needs a different visa. If work is the real purpose of your trip, the ETA is the wrong tool — the pathways are set out in our Australian visa guide for Canadian citizens.

What's Different for a Canadian Passport

For tourism, the ETA experience for Canadians is identical to that of other eligible nationalities — same app, same conditions, same stay rules. There are no Canada-only requirements, extra documents, or special centres. A few points are still worth flagging for Canadian travellers:

  • A permanent-residence card does not extend your ETA. Family or colleagues travelling with you who are not Canadian citizens need their own visa based on their own passport nationality.
  • Every traveller needs their own ETA, including children. A Canadian family of four lodges four separate applications, each with its own passport scan and AU$20 charge.
  • Renewing your passport invalidates the ETA. Because the ETA is tied to a specific passport number, getting a new Canadian passport voids the existing ETA even if it has not expired — re-apply in the app on the new passport.

If a single continuous stay beyond three months is what you need, the ETA cannot stretch to it, and the Subclass 600 tourist visa is the alternative.

Feature ETA (601) Tourist Visa (600)
Best for Canadians when Short visits, repeat trips Stays beyond 3 months

Maximum stay 3 months per visit Up to 12 months (per grant)

Multiple entries Yes Depends on the grant

Common Mistakes Canadian Travellers Make

  • Paying a middleman website. The only genuine channel is the app, and the only cost is AU$20. Sites charging CA$100-plus to "handle" your ETA are reselling a form you can complete yourself in minutes.
  • Trying to apply on a laptop. There is no desktop or web version — the chip scan and selfie only work on a phone.
  • Using an old passport with no chip. The app needs an NFC e-passport. An older Canadian passport may fail the scan, in which case the Subclass 600 is your route.
  • Applying after landing. You must be outside Australia when you apply and when the ETA is granted.
  • Booking non-refundable travel first. Most grants are quick, but some are referred to manual review — wait for the grant before you commit.
  • Assuming remote work is allowed. Doing your Canadian job online from Australian soil is work, and the ETA does not permit it.

ETA vs Other Visitor Options for Canadians

The ETA is the default for short Canadian visits, but it is not the only door. If you need to stay longer than three months in one go, or your older passport will not scan, the Subclass 600 tourist visa is the alternative — it can be granted with longer stay periods but is applied for through ImmiAccount and costs more. European-passport holders instead use the eVisitor (subclass 651); Canadians are not on that list. For a clean side-by-side of the two app-and-online visitor visas, see our ETA vs eVisitor comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Canadian citizens need a visa to visit Australia?

Yes. There is no fully visa-free entry to Australia for tourism. Canadian citizens need an Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601), which acts as a visa and is applied for in the Australian ETA app before you travel. It permits tourism and business visitor activities, but not work, and costs AU$20.

How much does the Australian ETA cost for Canadians?

The ETA costs a single AU$20 service charge, paid by card inside the official Australian ETA app. That is the entire cost — there are no separate government or handling fees on a genuine ETA. Any website charging more is a third-party reseller adding a markup, not the official channel.

How do Canadian citizens apply for the ETA?

Only through the official Australian ETA mobile app on iOS or Android. You scan your Canadian e-passport chip, take a selfie the app matches to your passport photo, answer short declaration questions, and pay AU$20. There is no website, desktop form, or ImmiAccount step for the ETA.

How long can a Canadian citizen stay in Australia on an ETA?

Up to three months per visit, with the ETA valid for up to 12 months from grant. You can enter and leave as many times as you like during that period, each entry resetting a fresh three-month stay. A separate cap limits total time to 12 months within any 18-month period. The ETA cannot be extended.

Can Canadian citizens work in Australia on an ETA?

No. The ETA allows business visitor activities — conferences, meetings, negotiations — but not paid work for an Australian employer or billable work performed in Australia. Remote work at your laptop still counts as work if you are physically in Australia. To work, see the pathways in our Canadian citizen visa guide.

What happens to my ETA if I renew my Canadian passport?

Your ETA is tied to a specific passport number, so renewing your passport invalidates the ETA even if it has not expired. You simply re-apply in the app using your new Canadian passport. Always travel on the passport your ETA is linked to, or you may be refused at check-in.

Do I need to print my ETA before flying to Australia?

No. The ETA is entirely electronic and linked to your Canadian passport number. Airlines and immigration officers verify it digitally at check-in and arrival — there is no label, stamp, or printout to carry. Saving a screenshot of your grant notification is sensible as a personal record, but it is not required at the border.
