ETA (Subclass 601) for Hong Kong Citizens
Hong Kong (SAR of China) passports are on the ETA (subclass 601) passport list, so HKSAR passport holders can use the Electronic Travel Authority for short visits.

Important Note on Passport Type
The ETA is available to holders of the HKSAR passport. If you hold a British National (Overseas) — BN(O) — passport, you can also use it for the ETA: "United Kingdom—British National (Overseas)" is on the list. BN(O) passports can't be used for the eVisitor. Chinese passport holders from Hong Kong who do not hold an HKSAR passport are not eligible for the ETA and must apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600).
Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) for Hong Kong Citizens
Hong Kong is eligible for the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417), providing young Hong Kongers with the opportunity to live and work in Australia for up to three years.
Eligibility
- Aged 18 to 30 (inclusive) at time of application
- Hold a valid HKSAR passport
- Approximately AUD $5,000 in funds plus return airfare
- Meet health and character requirements
- No dependent children
- Not previously held a 417 visa (for first year)
Note: the age limit for the HKSAR passport is 30, not the extended 35 that applies to some other nationalities. The UK entry on the 417 list includes British National (Overseas) passport holders, with an age limit of 35.
Work and Study
- Work for any employer (six-month limit per employer)
- Study for up to four months
- 12 months from first entry
Second and Third Year
- Second year: 3 months of specified work on your first visa
- Third year: 6 months of specified work on your second visa

Pathway to Permanent Residency (Subclass 191)
The Hong Kong stream of the subclass 191 visa is for Hong Kong or BN(O) passport holders who have lived and worked in regional Australia. The key requirements include:
- Holding an eligible visa (a subclass 457, 482 or 485 granted on the primary criteria) when you apply, and having held that visa for at least 3 years. Several visas, even of the same subclass, can't be combined to meet this
- Living in a designated regional area for a continuous 3 years just before you apply, with any work or study in that time done in a regional area
- Complying with visa conditions during the qualifying period

Hong Kong Stream of the Skilled Independent Visa
If you don't live in a regional area, the Hong Kong stream of the subclass 189 visa asks for 4 years instead. You must have held a 457, 482 or 485 for at least 4 years and been usually resident in Australia for a continuous 4 years just before you apply. You must still hold that visa when you apply, and several visas can't be combined to reach the 4 years. The subclass 494 is a separate regional employer-sponsored visa with no Hong Kong stream. Holders of any nationality can apply for permanent residence after 3 years.

- British National (Overseas) passports issued to Hong Kong residents
