On 15 September 2026, Home Affairs warned permanent residents that a permanent visa alone does not let you back into Australia. You also need a valid travel facility. If it runs out while you're overseas, you need a Resident Return visa (RRV) before you can fly home.
What the warning says
A travel facility is the part of a permanent visa that lets you leave and re-enter Australia. Home Affairs says it is "typically valid for one or five years". So the visa is permanent, but the travel facility has an end date.
Date: published 15 September 2026. Who it affects: every Australian permanent resident who isn't a citizen and plans to travel overseas.
Before you leave Australia
Home Affairs asks permanent residents to:
- Check VEVO to confirm your travel facility is valid for the whole trip.
- Apply early for a Resident Return visa if your travel facility will expire before you plan to come back.
- Check your passport is valid and linked to your visa in VEVO.
If your travel facility has already expired, or will expire while you're away, you must apply for an RRV and have it granted before you can return. Home Affairs says this "can take time and fees apply, so plan ahead".
Two traps to avoid
- Airlines will stop you at check-in. Home Affairs says airlines cannot let you board without a valid travel facility or an RRV linked to the passport you're travelling on.
- Don't come back on a visitor visa or ETA instead. The department says this "can have serious long-term consequences", including for your citizenship eligibility, your permanent residence status, and entitlements such as Medicare and unrestricted work rights.
That second trap matters if you hold a passport that can get an ETA or eVisitor. It can look like a quick fix, but it can cost you far more than an RRV.
Long-term option
Citizenship removes the problem, because Australian citizens don't need a visa to come home. Home Affairs links to Become a citizen in the same notice.

FAQ
Why do I need a travel facility if my visa is permanent?
Home Affairs says a permanent visa does not let you enter Australia without a valid travel facility. The travel facility is typically valid for one or five years. After it ends, you need a Resident Return visa to come back.
Can I return on an ETA if my travel facility has expired?
Home Affairs says not to. Returning on a visitor visa or an ETA instead of an RRV can affect your citizenship eligibility, your permanent residence status and entitlements such as Medicare.
How do I check my travel facility?
Use VEVO, the free online visa check. It shows whether your travel facility is still valid and whether your current passport is linked to your visa.
