Traveling to Australia from the USA: Entry Rules and Documents
To travel to Australia from the USA as a tourist, you need a valid US passport and an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) granted before you leave. You apply in the official Australian ETA app, which costs AUD 20. The ETA lasts 12 months and allows stays of up to 3 months per entry. On arrival you fill in a passenger card and pass immigration and customs checks.

Which visa do Americans need?
A US passport is on the list of 34 passports that can get an ETA. The US is not on the eVisitor list, so the free eVisitor that UK and European travelers use is not an option for you. Home Affairs says every passport holder except Australians and New Zealanders needs "the right visa to come to Australia" and must "get your visa before you travel to Australia." There is no visa on arrival for Americans.
The ETA covers tourism, visiting family and friends, business visitor activities, and up to 3 months of study in total. It is not a work visa. If you want to stay longer than 3 months in one go, you need a different visa, usually the Visitor visa (subclass 600), because the ETA can't be extended.
One exception to know about now: if you have a criminal conviction in any country, including a DUI that ended in a criminal conviction, Home Affairs' advice is to apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) instead of an ETA. Your pre-trip timeline
These steps are our suggested order, not official deadlines. Home Affairs publishes no "apply X weeks before" rule for the ETA.
As soon as you have dates
- Check every passport in your group. The ETA is tied to one passport. If a passport is due to expire before or during your trip, renew it first. If you renew after getting the ETA, the ETA stops working and you have to apply again.
- Check who holds which passport. A spouse or relative traveling on a non-US passport may need a different visa and a much longer lead time. Our guide for American families with mixed passports covers this.
- Check your ETA validity window. The ETA runs 12 months from the day it's granted, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Before you book non-refundable travel
- Apply for the ETA in the official app. Home Affairs suggests you "do not make travel arrangements until we grant your ETA." Most ETA results come back immediately, so applying first costs you very little.
- Each traveler applies separately, children included. If everyone applies on the same phone, you can submit and pay for all the applications at once.
- Check the grant. Look at your email (including the junk folder) or use the app's "Visa check" function. See how long the ETA takes for Americans if yours doesn't arrive right away.
Two to four weeks out
- Buy travel insurance with medical cover. More on why below.
- Check the rules for anything you're packing. Medicines, food and duty-free goods all have rules. Our Australia entry requirements checklist covers them in full.
- Save a copy of your ETA grant email. You don't need to print anything, because the ETA is linked to your passport digitally, but it's handy to have.
72 hours out
If you're flying Qantas, you may be offered the digital Australia Travel Declaration in the Qantas app. It lets you pre-fill your passenger card up to 72 hours before your flight. This is still a pilot. Everyone else fills in the paper card.
Day of travel
Australia's Border Force says "some checks are done before an aircraft even leaves for Australia" and that "airlines provide the Department with advance notice of passenger details." Travel on the exact passport you used for the ETA. If the details don't match, Home Affairs warns you "might experience delays when boarding your aircraft."
Passport rules for US citizens
Validity. Home Affairs and the Australian Border Force require "a valid passport" and publish no six-month rule. That said, your ETA only lasts as long as your passport does, so a passport that expires mid-trip is a problem in practice. Some airlines and transit countries have their own rules, so check each stop on your route.
Same passport, start to finish. Home Affairs says: "Your ETA is attached to your current passport. If your current passport expires or you get a new passport: your ETA will cease · you must apply for a new ETA." It also says: "You must enter Australia using the same passport."
Your details must match exactly. If your ETA details don't match your passport, you "might experience delays when boarding your aircraft or be refused entry in Australia." Home Affairs cannot change the details on an ETA once it's issued. The app reads your passport chip, which helps, but check the name before you submit.
Dual nationals. If you hold another passport as well as your US one, you must declare it in the ETA application. If you are also an Australian citizen, you can't get an ETA at all. Home Affairs says Australian citizens "should use their Australian passport to enter and leave Australia."

- Your accommodation address and a contact in Australia (the ETA app asks for contact details in Australia too)
- Any prescriptions for medicines you're bringing

Arriving in Australia
At immigration, the Australian Border Force says non-citizens need "a valid passport," "a valid visa or authority to enter Australia (including electronic visas)" and "a completed and signed Incoming Passenger card, including health and character declaration."
The passenger card. Every arrival must complete one, and it asks about your health and any criminal convictions, not just what's in your bags. The ABF warns that for non-citizens, "providing false information can affect their visa status." A parent can fill in the card for their children.
SmartGate. SmartGate is not limited to certain nationalities. You may be able to use the arrivals SmartGates if you have an ePassport, are at least 1.1 m tall, and are 7 or older. Children under 16 must be with a parent or guardian. US passports with the ePassport symbol fall under this general rule.
Fingerprints. The ABF says non-citizens "may be required to have your fingerprints checked when arriving or departing." The scans are not kept.
Customs and biosecurity. The passenger card also asks what you're bringing in. When in doubt, declare it. The full entry requirements checklist lists what to declare, duty-free limits and the medicine rules.
Health cover: Medicare won't cover you
Australia has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with 11 countries, according to Services Australia. These cover "the cost of medically necessary care" for visitors from those countries. The United States is not one of them. That means an American visitor who gets sick or injured in Australia pays the full cost. Money
Prices in Australia are in Australian dollars (AUD), and so is the ETA fee. The AUD 20 charge appears on your card in AUD, so your bank may add a foreign transaction fee. If your card is declined in the app, our ETA payment declined guide walks through the fixes.
Common mistakes American travelers make
- Thinking Americans don't need a visa. You do. The ETA is quick, but you can't board without it.
- Paying a website instead of using the app. You must apply through the Australian ETA app, and the only charge is the AUD 20 service fee. Home Affairs says: "There is no other charge payable for an ETA."
- Renewing a passport after getting the ETA. The ETA ceases. Apply again on the new passport.
- Booking non-refundable flights first. Most ETA results are instant, but some take longer, and Home Affairs publishes no way to speed one up.
- Answering "no" to the conviction question because a DUI was long ago. The app asks about criminal convictions. Answer truthfully. Home Affairs says: "If you do not provide accurate information, we may cancel your ETA."
- Assuming a Green Card makes a family member eligible. Eligibility follows the passport, not US residency. A Green Card holder with a passport that isn't on the ETA list needs a different visa.
- Staying past 3 months. Each entry allows up to 3 months. Frequent or long visits can lead to questions at the border about whether you're a genuine visitor.
